Jinkinson

Our first skijor outing of the season! About a ton of snow has fallen in the last few weeks, and even more unusual for this time of year, it hasn't melted away and may even be here to stay. By all accounts it will be a particularly cold and snowy winter so hopefully as long as it's not TOO cold there will be many more skijor outings this winter.

Went to the Jinkinson access to the abandaned rail corridor turned recreational trail (took the west leg). The down side to this trail is that it's not very challenging, being straight and flat. But then, the up side to this trail is that it's not very challenging, being straight and flat. :-) So it's perfect for a nice easy all-out run.

Luckily for me, Walter makes a terrific "lead" dog, if that's the appropriate term since he's not technically in the lead? He responds really well to "easy", "whoa", "run", and "on by" (although the latter has only been used with minor distractions so far), and his 20 pound weight advantage helps him "convince" Lucy to do what I'm asking. Lucy loves the running part of skijoring but can't understand why exploring the crisscrossing wildlife trails isn't part of the game. Again, Walter comes in really handy here for keeping her on track.

Took a break from poling (can't do much else at this speed until I get some skate skiis) to record some video. At one point you can see Lucy try to go off into the bush but good old Walter keeps her in line.

How in the *world* did you manage to take videos, hold onto your dogs and stay upright all at the same time?! I could maybe do one of the three, never two of the three.

Very cool.

Hi there,

Heh. Well... the first key is to let the dogs get their skijor zoomies out first before trying anything. The bungee line attaching the dogs to my waist belt keeps the hands free. Staying upright was (relatively) easy that day because the trail wasn't icy. That said, I don't plan to try to take video again now that I have some. :-)

That's great video...Walter is so steady! And Lucy is a crack up giving a shot at running off in a random direction :)

They look great!
