Skijoring-how fun! I've been wanting to try this for years but I've never quite gotten around to it. There are only a couple of days a year where there is enough snow in town so I need to drive about 2 hours into the moutains to find places that have flattish trails for skijoring. This year though I really want to make the effort.
Yes, it *is* fun! I put off trying it for a long time due to visions of being dragged for miles and miles with no way to stop the out-of-control raging dog/s in front of me. After working up the guts to try it, I quickly learned how effective a brake one's butt on the ground is. :-)
I'm sure you'd enjoy it, and I understand most dogs adore it too and Cody and Lola look like a great size for it. Many people who skijor also do scootering with their dogs on the shoulders of the winter season when the weather is cold enough but there's no snow on the ground, so that might be an option to avoid 2 hour drives.
I've thought about getting a scooter but I also have visions of being dragged around by my out of control crazy hounds. My husband thinks me on skis plus the dogs is a trip to the ER waiting to happen but I'm determined we can do it. There are some clinics at some of the mountain resorts and I'm going to try to get a friend to go so I don't wuss out. We tried to go last year but something came up.
Hi Lucy and Walter's mom and dad... I wanted to say hello and tell you I really like your blog. I was searching skijoring blogs (we do a lot of dog-centric sports with our crew) and found this one. I was shocked to see Walter, who looks like the twin to my sweet best friend, Sophie, whom we lost to cancer on Wednesday. She was at the peak of her life and we are devastated. Some of the pictures of Walter were identical to my punk muffin's. I saw that there are many guesses as to Walter's "breed" and wanted to let you know that Sophie was a Belgian Malinois.
If you feel like looking at pics or videos of her (as well as our other 6 punks, we've had as many as 9), you can view them at http://smrp.typepad.com
We will be doing a lot of canicross, bikejoring, and skijoring this year and will have more fun pictures.
I'll be checking your blog regularly to see what fun you and your crew are up to, but also to think about my little girl with each cute picture of Walter. Please give him a very big hug from a new admirer...
Thank you very much for your note. I visited your blog and will be checking it often. I love how your dogs are all rescues. :-) Sophie was a lucky girl to have such a wonderful home with so many friends; I hope the memories of all the happy times you shared will help ease the pain of her loss.
I agree, the resemblance is remarkable. Also, the photo of Sophie and her friend hitched up to the car really looks like Walter's mom, who's an awesome skijor dog who teams up with her canine friend and housemate, a rescue black border collie mix. Photos of her are at http://www.awarenesspet.ca - that's her on the cover photo, and there are many more photos of her throughout the site including the events and fun races pages.
I've met a few malinois but they've all been red rather than sandy beige. When Walter was a pup I wondered if he might be part malinois, but he doesn't have the mal intensity (unless he's in the car en route to his favourite dog park) and the markings of some of his littermates are traditional german shepherd. But, who knows.
Another blog you may be interested in is The Taj Mutthall (http://www.finchester.org/dogs/dog_diary/) or, more specifically, Remington's page (http://www.finchester.org/RemingtonsPage.html). Remington is (was...) another dog of unknown heritage who looked a fair bit like Walter and Sophie.
One last thing, in reference to the first photo in your November 19th post, check out this photo from the summer: http://www.geocities.com/walterandlucy/207Jul1013.jpg Kinda neat eh.
